Compare different pack sizes fairly
The unit price is the price of one standard amount of a product: per ounce, pound, kilogram, liter or item. It lets you compare packs of different sizes fairly. The formula: Unit price = price ÷ quantity. A 16 oz jar for $3.49 costs about $0.22 per ounce; a 32 oz jar for $5.99 costs about $0.19 per ounce, so the bigger jar is cheaper. To compare correctly: • Bring both products to the same unit. This calculator converts oz, lb, fl oz, g, kg, ml and L automatically. • Only compare like with like: weight with weight, volume with volume, items with items. • For canned food in liquid use the drained weight; for detergent and paper use the number of loads or sheets. Bigger isn't always cheaper. Sale prices on small packs, multi-buy deals and store brands often beat the large size, which is why many stores print the unit price on the shelf tag. A lower unit price only saves money if you use the product before it goes bad.
Common questions about unit price
Divide the price by the quantity. For a 16 oz jar at $3.49: 3.49 ÷ 16 = about $0.22 per ounce. Before comparing, convert every product to the same unit (for example ounces).
