Regular pay, overtime rate and total pay
Overtime is time worked beyond your regular hours. It is usually paid at a higher rate: your hourly rate times a multiplier. • Overtime rate = hourly rate × multiplier • Overtime pay = overtime rate × overtime hours • Total pay = hourly rate × regular hours + overtime pay In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires non-exempt employees to get at least 1.5 times their regular rate ("time and a half") for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states add daily overtime; California, for example, pays 1.5× after 8 hours in a day and double time after 12. In the UK there is no legal overtime premium, so the rate depends on your contract, though average pay for all hours must not fall below the minimum wage. Example: at $20 an hour with 40 regular and 5 overtime hours, regular pay is $800, the overtime rate is $30, overtime pay is $150 and the week's total is $950 before tax. To turn a salary into an hourly rate, divide the annual salary by 2,080 (52 weeks × 40 hours).
Common questions about overtime
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 to get the overtime rate, then multiply by the overtime hours. $20 × 1.5 × 5 hours = $150.
