Speed = distance ÷ time
Speed, distance and time are linked by one formula, so you only need two of them to find the third: • Speed = distance ÷ time • Distance = speed × time • Time = distance ÷ speed Example: a car that covers 150 miles in 1 hour 30 minutes averages 150 ÷ 1.5 = 100 mph. The same trip at 60 mph takes 150 ÷ 60 = 2.5 hours, or 2 hours 30 minutes. To turn minutes into hours, divide by 60: 30 minutes is 0.5 hours and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. Writing 1 hour 30 minutes as 1.30 hours is a common mistake. The result is an average. Real trips take a little longer because of traffic, stops and speed limits. The pace row shows how long one mile takes, which is handy for running and walking. The calculator works the same in kilometres: enter km and read km/h.
Common questions about speed, distance and time
Divide the total distance by the total time. 150 miles ÷ 1.5 hours = 100 mph. If the time is in minutes, divide by 60 first to get hours.
