What Is a Healthy Waist-to-Hip Ratio?

The formula, WHO cut-offs and how to measure

Your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is your waist circumference divided by your hip circumference: WHR = waist ÷ hips. It shows where your body stores fat. Fat around the belly (around the organs) is more strongly linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure than fat on the hips and thighs, so WHR adds information that weight or BMI alone don't give. The World Health Organization defines abdominal obesity as a WHR of 0.85 or more in women and 0.90 or more in men, the point at which metabolic risk rises substantially. The calculator reads your result like this: • Women: below 0.80 low, 0.80–0.84 moderate, 0.85 or more high risk • Men: below 0.90 low, 0.90–0.99 moderate, 1.00 or more high risk To measure: stand up straight, breathe out normally and keep the tape snug but not tight. Measure your waist midway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone (for most people around the belly button), and your hips at the widest point. Use the same unit for both; the ratio is the same in inches or centimetres. This tool isn't a diagnosis. Results can mislead during pregnancy and for under-18s; talk to your doctor about health decisions.

Common questions about waist-to-hip ratio

Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. A 30-inch waist and 40-inch hips give 30 ÷ 40 = 0.75.
