Mass, volume and density
Density is mass per unit of volume: • ρ = m ÷ V • m = ρ × V • V = m ÷ ρ Example: a piece of steel with a mass of 7.85 kg and a volume of 1 litre (0.001 m³) has a density of 7.85 ÷ 0.001 = 7,850 kg/m³, or 7.85 g/cm³. Some common densities (kg/m³): air ≈ 1.2, water ≈ 1,000, ice ≈ 917, aluminium ≈ 2,700, steel ≈ 7,850, copper ≈ 8,960. Objects less dense than water float. Density changes slightly with temperature.
Common questions about density
ρ = m ÷ V. With mass in kg and volume in m³, the result is in kg/m³. Divide by 1,000 for g/cm³.
