How Is a Healthy Weight Calculated?

The weight range from body mass index

The World Health Organization and the CDC treat a body mass index (BMI) of 18.5 to 24.9 as normal for adults. Since BMI = weight ÷ height² (kg and meters), the healthy range is: • Lowest healthy weight = 18.5 × height² • Highest healthy weight = 24.9 × height² Example: for 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in), height² = 3.0625. The healthy range runs from 18.5 × 3.0625 = 56.7 kg to 24.9 × 3.0625 = 76.3 kg, about 125 to 168 lb. The middle (BMI 22) is 67.4 kg (149 lb). BMI can't tell muscle from fat. The range may not suit athletes, older adults, pregnant women or anyone under 18. Waist size and body fat also say a lot about health.
