How Much Rice Per Person?

Dry versus cooked rice weight

How much rice you need depends on the meal: • Side dish: 50–60 g dry rice • Main course where rice is the base: 80–100 g dry rice • Large servings or hungry guests: 100 g or more The calculator uses 75 g by default, a portion that fills about half a plate. Rice absorbs water as it cooks and ends up about 2.8 times its dry weight, so 100 g of dry rice gives roughly 280 g of cooked rice. For the volume of dry rice, 1 ml is about 0.8 g: 300 g of dry rice is about 375 ml, or 1½ metric cups. Example: 4 people × 75 g = 300 g of dry rice, about 840 g once cooked. These figures are for white long-grain rice. Brown rice gains slightly less, and basmati and jasmine behave much the same; the differences are small. For the water, use the Water to Rice Ratio calculator.
