The weighted grade formula
Your course grade is the weighted sum of your current grade and your final exam score. If the final's weight is w (0.40 for 40%): • Course grade = final × w + current grade × (1 − w) • Needed on the final = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w Example: your current grade is 85, you want 90 and the final counts 40%. Your current grade contributes 85 × 0.60 = 51 points. You are 90 − 51 = 39 points short, and the final must supply them: 39 ÷ 0.40 = 97.5. So you need 97.5 on the final. It works the other way too: with a current grade of 91, a final score of 88.6 and a weight of 15%, your course grade is 88.6 × 0.15 + 91 × 0.85 = 90.64. If the needed score is above 100, the target cannot be reached without extra credit. If it is zero or below, you have already reached it without the final. The calculation assumes accurate inputs and does not account for curves, make-up exams or grading rules that change during the term.
Common questions about the final grade
Needed on the final = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight. With a current grade of 85, a target of 90 and a weight of 40%, you need 97.5.
