Volume formulas for a cube, cylinder, sphere, cone and pyramid
Volume is the amount of space a solid takes up. Enter all sizes in the same unit and the result comes out in cubic units. The calculator uses these formulas: • Cube: V = a³ • Rectangular box: V = length × width × height • Cylinder: V = π × r² × h • Sphere: V = 4/3 × π × r³ • Cone: V = 1/3 × π × r² × h • Square pyramid: V = 1/3 × a² × h Example: a cylinder with a radius of 5 cm and a height of 10 cm has a volume of π × 5² × 10 = 785.4 cm³. Because 1 litre is 1,000 cm³, that is 0.785 litres. Pick one length unit for all sizes; the result is that unit cubed. A cone or pyramid holds exactly one third of the cylinder or box with the same base and height.
Common questions about calculating volume
Multiply the square of the radius by π and by the height: V = π × r² × h. A radius of 3 cm and height of 10 cm gives 282.7 cm³.
