Height difference, percentage and ratio
A height comparison shows how far apart two people's heights are. The difference is the taller height minus the shorter one. The same gap is then turned into a percentage in two ways: how much taller the taller person is (difference ÷ shorter height) and how much shorter the shorter person is (difference ÷ taller height). The height ratio is Person A's height divided by Person B's. Example: 5 ft 9 in (69 in) and 5 ft 6 in (66 in) differ by 3 in. The taller person is 3 ÷ 66 = 4.5% taller, the shorter person is 3 ÷ 69 = 4.3% shorter, and the ratio is 69 ÷ 66 = 1.05. The two percentages differ because the same gap is measured against a different person. The difference is also shown in centimetres (1 in = 2.54 cm).
Common questions about comparing heights
